Sleep under the stars on Montalvo's front lawn! Coinciding with the Perseid meteor showers and taking place during a Friday-Saturday night in August, our annual Starry, Starry Night invites the community to learn about the vast night skies and the art it inspires.
Coinciding with the opening of the Beijing Olympics, Starry, Starry Night 2008 looks at Jupiter, who (as Zeus in Greek mythology) is the father of the Olympic games.
Guests at Starry, Starry Night 2008 will enjoy:
- Through the Telescope: Powerful telescopes will be available on the Front Lawn for your viewing pleasure.
- Stories for a Starry Night: Delivered beneath the open sky, these stories are sure to stir the imagination and create a personal connection with the natural world.
- Visual Arts: Inspired by the night sky, these hands-on art projects will introduce guests to shared elements of art and science, including light and shadow, positive and negative space, and more!
- Outdoor Cinema: Throughout the evening, the Garden Theater will provide opportunity to sit and relax while viewing movies under the stars.
- Olympic Opening Ceremonies: rebroadcast from 2:30am - 7:00am
- Art Installations on the Grounds
- Night Hike: Enjoy Montalvo's trails with our local county park rangers.
- Breakfast: Start your morning with a delicious breakfast at Montalvo’s beautiful Villa with Jessie Benthien, Montalvo's Culinary Fellow in Residence.
“Round ‘bout 12:30 a.m., I was standing on the lawn, surrounded by sleeping people, listening to them breathe, watching spots of red light thread through the darkness. It was like a beautiful art happening. Maybe it was.” – Steven
