Michael Arcega is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in sculpture and installations. His art, though visual, is largely inspired by language and jokes. He utilizes comedic strategies and tactics to express darker global issues stemming from asymmetrical power dynamics. Born in Manila, Philippines, his family immigrated to Southern California when he was ten. He received his BFA at the San Francisco Art Institute and his MFA at Stanford University. Michael resides in San Francisco and is currently a Graduate Fellow at the Headlands Center for the Arts.
His work has been seen in exhibitions nationally and internationally. His solo shows include the de Young Museum, San Francisco; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu; Marx & Zavattero, SF; and Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, NY. Arcega has enjoyed residencies at the De Young Art Center in San Francisco, 18th St. Art Center in Santa Monica, and Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito. Recently, He was awarded the Joan Mitchell MFA award and is looking forward to a solo exhibition at Steve Turner Contemporary in March 2010
