Howard Hersh was born in Santa Monica, California in 1940 and studied piano in Los Angeles and composition at Stanford University.
He has received awards from organizations that include Meet the Composer, the American Symphony Orchestra League, the American Composers Forum, and the irvine Foundation,whose fellowship helped underwrite his stay at the Montalvo Art Center's Lucas Artists Residency Program. His works, from solo compositions to opera, have been performed at venues that range from the Tanglewood Festival to Grace Cathedral, from European concert halls to the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
His music can be heard on Albany Records' 2007 release,"The Pony Concerto," and "Angels and Watermarks," a recording of keyboard works that includes his Concerto for Piano and Ten Instruments. "Madam's Tavern," a new collection of chamber music, will be released later this year.
