The Opening Party for the 2011 Sculpture on the Grounds program will include lively music, the opportunity to meet the artists, libations and food, and some surprises! Come early, beginning at 6pm, and enjoy a Final Fridays performance by Ernesto Martinez, followed by a celebration of "Traces, Twigs, and Time" and a reception in the Project Space Gallery for the new exhibition, Records and Marks, which will be on view through October 16.
In addition to the artworks that will be on display for the coming months as part of “Traces, Twigs & Time,” the July 29th party will feature several special one-night only installations on the grounds by sonicSENSE and students from UCSC’s OpenLab, as well as performances by Artist in Residence Nancy Popp; Janetta Coleman & the Monsoon; and the Cardboard Box Theatre Project.
In addition to longstanding sculptures by David Middlebrook which were installed last summer, new sculptures this year include Control Tower by Cameron Hockensen; a unique Flower Pot Study by Seyed Alavi; and Signs, a poem posted along the roadways, which is also by Alavi.
Records and Marks:
Scientists and artists alike are fascinated with mapping both natural and manmade phenomena, from landscapes to highways to towns, from human behaviors to digital data. Maps provide navigation systems and access to places unknown. As part of Natural and Creative Capital, a review of the current recordings of humanity and human nature seemed in order. More and more frequently, it is our artists that are being called upon to assist in visualizing and interpreting information. Artists Lordy Rodriguez, Adriane Colburn, and Alexander Chen, among others, will present their works of mapping developed from their own personal introspection into geography and identity, ranging from a delicate interpretation of city infrastructure to a sound composition and data visualization based upon the New York City subway systems. Employing the tools of cartography, these artists will allow visitors to explore the peaks and valleys in which a creative mind travels the imagination to interpret reality.
