VENUE: Historic Villa
Celebrate the International Year of Astronomy - and the 400th anniversary of the invention of the telescope - at Montalvo!
Art and astronomy collide at Montalvo's sixth annual Starry, Starry Night: Art & Astronomy Slumber Party. Coinciding with the Perseid meteor showers, Starry, Starry Night invites the community to learn about the vast night skies and the art it inspires. Enjoy stimulating astronomy talks by guest astronomers and hear a storyteller weave tales of the night sky. Explore space through contemporary art installations and films and create art inspired by the heavens. Sleep under the stars on Montalvo's front lawn and wake to breakfast at the Historic Villa.
Join us in August for:
- Fly through Space with AstroTable by Onomy Labs (Scott Minneman and Dale MacDonald) with J.D. Beltran. Observe our universe's phenomena up close and personal, including the paths of planets and spacecraft, lines and sketches of constellations, and much more!
- Through the Telescope: Powerful telescopes will be available on the Front Lawn for your viewing pleasure.
- Stories for a Starry Night: Delivered beneath the open sky, these stories are sure to stir the imagination and create a personal connection with the natural world.
- Ranger-Led Hikes: Enjoy Montalvo's trails with our local county park rangers. Join Ranger Kristy Barton for a night hike exploring Montalvo's trails, or take a sunrise hike with Ranger Linda Hyman to the beautiful Lookout Point.
- Visual Arts: Inspired by the night sky, these hands-on art projects will introduce guests to shared elements of art and science, including light and shadow, positive and negative space, and more!
- Midnight Movies: coming soon!
- Exhibit: Connie Samaras' Enjoy Your Time: Excerpts from After the American Century (2009), Vast Active Living Intelligence System (2005), Angelic States-Event Sequence (1998-2003)
- Breakfast: Start your morning with a delicious breakfast at Montalvo’s beautiful Villa!
“Round ‘bout 12:30 a.m., I was standing on the lawn, surrounded by sleeping people, listening to them breathe, watching spots of red light thread through the darkness. It was like a beautiful art happening. Maybe it was.” – Steven
