VENUE: Historic Villa
Our first encounter begins with a reappraisal of Shostakovich’s life and work in light of the information that has become public since the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union. By the time he was 23, Shostakovich had lived through severe famine, Civil War, the relatively liberal days of Lenin, and the tightening restrictions after Stalin’s rise in 1926. We explore Shostakovich’s education, life and music from his birth in 1906 through his Symphony No. 3, written in 1929.
