Our third session finds that World War II has greatly lightened Stalin’s artistic repressions, as any expressionistic art and negative content, including Shostakovich’s very dark work of 1941-45, is directly attributed to the Nazi invasion. Post-war, the terror returns and Shostakovich is again purged in 1948, and slowly rehabilitated until Stalin’s death in 1953.
