Kurt Rohde Call & Response
This final concert in the “From the Artists Studio” series with the charismatic Cypress String Quartet features the South Bay premiere of a brand new quartet called Gravities from brilliant young San Francisco composer Kurt Rohde. Rohde, whose music has been described as “filled with exhilaration and dread,” has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards for his innovative compositions, including the 2005 Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters; and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Koussevitzky Foundation of the Library of Congress and the Fromm Foundation of Harvard University.
Rohde composed this new piece of music using Bartok's Quartet No. 6 and Joseph Haydn's Quartet, Op. 77, No. 2 as inspiration. The Cypress will perform Rohde's composition in a fascinating evening of music and conversation. Rohde will be in attendance at the concert to provide insight into the creative process that culminated in this stunning new string quartet.
Montalvo members will enjoy an informal reception with Rohde and the Cypress following the performance.
