BULBO ARTISTS TALK

Tue, Apr 15th 2008, 5 p.m. - 6 p.m.

VENUE: The James and Natalie Thompson Gallery

bulbo explores the possibilities of exchange and collaboration while using broadcast media with constructive aims. Each of the collective’s projects lets people, who in their daily lives do not pursue an art practice, take part in the creative process. For bulbo, San Jose: DIY Media Strategies from the Border, bulbo will be exploring how the ever-strengthening, do-it-yourself trend in media broadcasting might play out with artistic attention and intervention.

The principle members of bulbo are: Jose Luis Figueroa, Lorena Fuentes, Sebastian Diaz, Miguel Alvarez, Juan Navarrete, Paola Rodriguez, David Figueroa, Blanca Espana, Aracely Blancarte, and Omar Foglio. All were either born or raised since childhood in Tijuana, growing up in the border environment of Tijuana and San Diego. This meant having family and friends, going to school, working or, in other words, just plain living in both countries.

bulbo is supported by Galatea. Galatea is a corporation that offers marketing and media production services. As Galatea’s creative outlet, bulbo has gone through three stages: first as a TV program; second, a whole media project with TV, radio, internet, magazine and record releases; and third, more of a public intervention project that mixes different media formats for broadcast. In 2007 Galatea/bulbo relocated their San Diego office to Los Angeles. Currently Galatea and bulbo have offices in Tijuana and Los Angeles.

Past projects include Tianguis de Diseno, Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso (Mexico City, Mex, 2007) and La Tienda de Ropa, inSite_05 (Tijuana/San Diego, Mex-US, 2005). And group exhibitions like Tijuana Organic, Cornerhouse (Manchester, UK, 2006); IV Bienal de Estandartes, CECUT (Tijuana, Mex, 2006); Strange New World, MCASD (San Diego, US, 2006) and SMMOA (Santa MonicaBulbo, US, 2007); and Tijuana Sessions, ARCO (Madrid, Spain, 2005).
